The Call for Entries for the 2009 Qantas Film & Television Awards closed on the 15 June 2009.

The QFTA took place on the 4 & 5 September 2009.

Q. Why were the New Zealand Screen Awards and the New Zealand Television Awards brought together?
A. By combining the awards we're raising the bar across the entire industry and that can only be good for the industry at large. We are also providing clarity and reducing confusion in the public’s mind by providing one single focused weekend of events.
Both former awards programmes have been successful in their own right. Having one awards programme will make these awards more competitive and more prestigious

Q. Why were there two events?
A. With almost sixty categories, we decided to have two ceremonies to ensure those winners are appropriately acknowledged. We included substantial highlights from the Qantas Film and Television Craft Awards at the second ceremony on the Saturday evening.

QANTAS FILM AND TELEVISION AWARDS WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The cream of New Zealand's film and television industries were celebrated tonight at a glittering gala event in the Civic Theatre, Auckland.

More than 750 guests, including Prime Minister Hon John Key, witnessed 39 Qantas Film and Television Awards being presented across news and current affairs, general television, documentary, and film categories.

A further 22 category winners were presented with awards during yesterday's Qantas Film and Television Craft Awards lunch-time function.

Guests at tonight's gala event included film directors Niki Caro and Gaylene Preston, actors Karl Urban and Lucy Lawless, and other luminaries from the New Zealand film and television community, with entertainment provided by The Topp Twins.

New Zealand Television Broadcasters' Council chief executive and awards organising committee co-chair Rick Friesen paid tribute to the fantastic support the film and television industries have given to the awards.

"Tonight was a wonderful celebration of the achievements of the very best in our industries, and we're extremely grateful for the broad endorsement the Awards have received from throughout the film and television communities," Mr Friesen says.

"The creative industries represented here can be justly proud of their collective efforts - the standard of the winning entrants is up there with the very best in the world."

Screen Directors Guild of New Zealand executive director Anna Cahill congratulated all the winners of the awards, and praised the efforts of the judges.

"We received 639 entries across 61 categories for this year's awards and our panels of expert judges dedicated nearly 1000 hours to determining the winners," Ms Cahill says.

"The overwhelming feedback from them was that the standard of film and television being produced in New Zealand continues to rise."

Qantas regional general manager New Zealand and Pacific Grant Lilly also applauded the winners at this year's awards.

"Qantas is very proud to join with the New Zealand Television Broadcasters' Council and the Screen Directors Guild of New Zealand in recognising the best and brightest of New Zealand's creative industries. I congratulate not only the winners, but all the finalists, for their contribution to ensuring New Zealand continues to have thriving film and television industries."

Deadline: 5pm Friday August 7 2009

The Qantas Film and Television Awards Committee is pleased to confirm that New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) has established a new international achievement award as part of the Qantas Film and Television Awards 2009.

This award will recognise the international success of businesses that have their origins in the New Zealand film and television industries.

In announcing this award, NZTE's Investment Director Graham Matthews said that NZTE was keen to support the growth and development of businesses that had genuine international potential. "Innovation is often key to that success and sometimes that's about building local capability that has global market appeal. NZTE is interested in working to take those success stories further by working with business to build platforms that will support sustained commercial growth. We see New Zealand's film and television industries as having significant international potential and we're delighted to have the opportunity to put the spotlight on businesses that are fulfilling that potential already".

Businesses nominated for this award will be judged by a panel of four (two judges appointed by NZTE and two by the Qantas Film and Television Awards Committee).

Up to three finalists will be selected and advised of their finalist status prior to the Awards ceremony on Saturday 5 September 2009. The winner will be announced on the night.

WELCOME TO THE QANTAS FILM AND TELEVISION AWARDS 2009

Our New Years resolution...

It's not every day that two high profile industry events come together to create one extraordinary awards programme...

The inaugural year of the Qantas Film and Television Awards attracted over 600 entries in 58 categories; 77 judges spent 900 hours judging, identifying finalists and ultimately determining the 2008 award winners.

In September the Screen Directors Guild of New Zealand and the New Zealand Television Broadcasters Council were proud to host 1200 industry people at two separate star studded award ceremonies to acknowledge the industry elite.

After a fantastic first year we're back and facing the challenge to be bigger and brighter in 2009.

What you can expect...

The Qantas Film and Television Awards are committed to delivering an awards programme of the highest calibre that reflects the originality and creativity of the New Zealand Film and Television industry.

This information will be available in the New Year.

From Best Feature Film to Best Short Film, Best News to Best Drama and Best Actor to Best Actress - the Qantas Film and Television Awards 2009 will again shine the spotlight across the industry, hosting a special celebration of the talents of our leading script writers, editors, cinematographers and camera people.

Dates for your diary...

Entries for the 2009 awards will open on 25 May, closing on 15 June, with finalists acknowledged on 5 August. The doors to the Civic will open again in September, with the Craft Awards lunch on Friday September 4 and the Gala Awards on Saturday 5 September.
